The Audi A3 hatchback is one of the smarter looking medium family hatchbacks and it attracts well-heeled buyers or company car drivers that don't want to draw too much attention to themselves. Most people will buy an A3 based mainly on the badge and, as a medium hatchback with excellent engines and sensible running costs (thanks to its strong residual values), it certainly ticks plenty of boxes.

Buying used

The S Line model will be the most popular because it will have all the extras that will give you the premium feel you want from an Audi. Look out for models with the technology package since most Audi owners will want this when you come to sell it on.

You might consider it a wise option to buy from an Audi dealer, but you’ll have to be prepared to shell out extra. Don’t be scared off by high-mileage diesels – they have usually had easy lives cruising at motorway speeds - but if they have covered a lot of ground make sure all the necessary servicing and maintenance has been done.

The A3 is a popular car and there will be strong demand for most models, especially the frugal 1.6-litre diesel that promises 74.3mpg and 99g/km of CO2. A full service history and cars in good condition will help get a quick sale.
