The BMW X6 is a bit of a hard one to pin down. On the face of it, it’s a tall riding 4x4 like the BMW X5, but it has a coupe roofline and promises sports car performance.

It’s less confusing now that when it first came out in 2008, as time has softened this slightly odd proposition. Rivals include Porsche Cayenne, Land Rover Range Rover Sport and Audi A7 Sportback.

That sloping roof compromises rear head space so it’s really more of a sport than utility vehicle, especially when compared to the X5 on which it is based.

As such it only comes with powerful engines, including two twin turbo petrols including a V8 for pretty breath-taking performance in the first generation car.
