The first generation of the BMW X5 went on sale here in the UK in 2000 and was the German firm’s first SUV. It placed itself against rivals like the Mercedes-Benz M-Class, Audi Q7 and Land Rover Range Rover and soon became a big hit.

BMW branded the X5 as a Sport Activity Vehicle rather than a Sports Utility Vehicle, to emphasize its on-road ability despite its size.

In 2007 the second generation came to the UK and proved to be more spacious, economical and quicker than before, plus for the first time for any BMW, was available with seven seats as an option making it an even more practical family-car choice.
