Following on from the success of the BMW X5 the German company launched a smaller 4x4 model, the BMW X3.

The first version was launched in 2004 and offered refined driving, a range of efficient engines and a decently-sized boot. The downside was the stiff ride, the high purchase price and poor level of standard kit compared to its rivals, such as the Volvo XC60 and Volkswagen Tiguan.

However, a lot of these issues were addressed with the new version that arrived in 2011. It came with sharp, modern styling, handled well on- and off-road and came with plenty of safety kit as standard. The BMW X3 secured the full five-star rating from Euro NCAP when it was tested in 2011.
